Summer always brings a dramatic increase in single-use packaging waste, mainly water and soft drinks. In areas with seasonal tourism, the problem is much greater: Millions of single-use packaging accumulates in the hot months on the Greek islands and coastal areas without being recycled. This phenomenon affects both ecosystems and the very value of a place, as experienced by visitors and residents. During the high season, plastic pollution in the Mediterranean region increases by 40%. Roza Kardara and Alexandros Kontis joined forces to found Whywasteme with a common goal: to develop new digital solutions so that no packaging becomes waste on our islands and coasts.

The Whywasteme team contacted Smartup to share their idea which soon morphed into the Whywasteme app. Smartup, guided by many years of experience in mobile apps and constant updating on new trends and technologies, created a mobile app that connects recycling with cleaner seas, starting from the beaches of Kimolos with a network in the Cyclades and Attica that is constantly growing.
